Voici quelques articles rédigés en anglais par les 4è3 suite à des recherches sur les femmes qui ont inspiré le film « Suffragette » (de Sarah Gavron). Ces recherches ont été effectuées en salle informatique (Wikipédia et Biography.com).
Barbara Ayrton Gould and her husband are one real couple who both supported female suffrage. In Suffragette Helena Boham Carter portrays pharmacist and bomb maker Ellyn.
Barbara studied chemistry and physiology at University college in London. The Goulds didn’t abandon their quest for women suffrage.
She became a menber of WSPU in 1906 and she was a full-time organizer for the group by 1909. Barbara and Gerald Gould got married in 1910. Gerald supported women’s suffrage pamphlet entitled The Democratic Plea.
ACTIONS: In march 1912 Barbara participated in smashing store windows.
CONSEQUENCE: She spent time in prison, she went to France for a time to avoid being arrested. She was frustated by WSPU leadership and Barbara left the groupe in 1914.
ACTION: In 1914 they were among the founders of the United Suffragists which has welcomed both men and women as members.
RESULTS: That group ended its campaign when 1918’s Representation of People Act gave women limited suffrage.
ASSIA ET SCHIRINE Z
She was born on 15th July 1858 in Manchester and died on 14 June 1929 in London. She became a famous women because she fought for women’s rights. She had three children, Christabel, Sylvia and Adela. After her husband’s death, she created the WSPU because she would like the right to vote for the women. The members of the WSPU protested, vandalized postboxes and they cut telegraph wires. Emmeline was arrested by the police. After her death, women got rights to vote and her daughter took the power at WSPU. Her two daughters took off WSPU but Emmeline didn’t accepted. It is for women like them that we must fight for equality between men and women!

Hannah Mitchell was born on 11 february 1872 and she died on 22 october 1956 when she was 84 years old. She was British and she was an English suffragette and socialist. Born into a poor family in Derbyshire, she left home at a young age to work as a seamstress in Bolton, where she became a socialist. She began to speak publicly at meetings. She joined and worked for the WSPU. She toured the country making speeches. (Later, she helped to organise a meeting of 40 ex-suffragettes in Manchester). She was charged with obstruction and went to prison for three days. In 1907, she suffered a nervous breakdown which her doctor put down to overwork and malnourishment. In 1918, the Representation of the People Act gave the right to vote to 40% of women.

She was born in 1881 . She was a British artist and author . She was a land Girl during the great War.
Olive joined the suffragette movement in 1913 . In 1913 , she participated in an arson attack on the Roehampton golf club and on a house at Walton Heath belonging to Lloyd George.
Olive has received a four-month sentence because the police suspected her .
In the film Suffragettes, we can see Ellyn preparing the arson attack on the house of Lloyd George.
Emily is one of the most popular suffragette. She was arrested on 9 occasions for her millitancy.
She is probably one of the suffragette who bombed Lloyd George’s house in 1913. She attacked a man with a whip when she mistook him for David Lloyd George. Her last millitant act took place at Epsom Derby in June 1913. She ran in front of the king’s horse and was subsequently trampled by it. She died a few days later.
Davidson’s true intentions have deen debated, some feel she wanted to become a martyr, others believe she only wanted to place the suffragettes’ Colors of purple white and green on the king’s horse . But there is no definitive answer.
Her death was a watershed moment for suffragettes. Their movement gained worldwide attention and 6000 women turned out for the funeral.
Women and men finally obtained the same rights in United Kingdom in 1928.

The suffragette Edith Margaret Garrud was born on 1872 in Bath. Her husband was William Garrud. She became a suffragette in 1909 and she often suffered harassment and attacks. She has been the first professional woman in martial arts instruction probabely in the world. She created the martial arts « suffrajitsu » for suffragettes . She kept suffragette leaders safe and out of police custody. She trained the Bodyguards unit of the Woman’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). Women learned to defend her rights and techniques of self defense. She died on 1917 at the age of 99. The actress who plays Edith Garrud in the film « Suffragette » is Bonham Carter.
